Refresh Training (An Online Subscription Service)

Refresh Training is a tiered, dynamic for ongoing professional development for CALTs, CALPs, and Dyslexia Specialists training in curriculum developed by the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia at Scottish Rite for Children in Dallas, Texas.

Introduction

Dyslexia Training and Evaluation Center of Waco is proud to offer Refresh Training. Continuous professional development is essential for Certified Academic Language Therapists (CALTs), Certified Academic Language Practitioners (CALPs), and Dyslexia/Reading Specialists to maintain the highest standards in practice and to stay updated with evolving methodologies. The Refresh Training Program is designed to meet these needs by offering a flexible, tiered subscription structure that supports active learning and professional growth.

Consideration

Currently, there is no on-going centralized support for Scottish Rite curriculum for those who are still seeking guidance beyond their initial training. Often therapists and teachers feel ashamed to ask questions, as if they "should know this by now". We have all seen the anonymous Facebook posts, asking curriculum questions about Take Flight. We all want to look professional and not feel as if we are constantly going to our peers for help. Sometimes we are the ONLY ones in our district who have been trained in the curriculum we are using. At times, it can be very isolating. We think most instructors want to be able to collaborate with others and use best practices while teaching the curriculum with fidelity. Despite our initial training, we still need more. We still need validation and a compass to show we are on "the right track". That is OK!

That is why we created Refresh Training. If you want a community of Qualified Instructors who were trained by the BEST in the business, you will find it here!

Who WE Are . . .

We are Qualified Instructors who have been trained by the best . . . Scottish Rite for Children. We have many decades of experience as trained therapists in dyslexia. Some of us started at the beginning of Take Flight, with the initial Retraining, back in 2003. Some of us have been trained as CALTs and QIs by the lead author and master, Karen Avrit, herself! We believe in the fidelity of the curriculum written by the staff at the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia at Scottish Rite for Children. That is why it is so important for us to offer this service to you! No matter how excellent your training may have been, there are still things to discover, and skills that may need to be improved. We are here to provide that safety net for you and to offer support in your endeavor to find a comfortable spot, even with the most trying lessons. We were once there, too. Let us help!

Program Structure

The Refresh Training Program is organized into distinct tiers - CALT level, or CALP levels trained in Jet, and Dyslexia Specialist/Reading Specialist - each tailored to varying professional development needs and time commitments.

  • Tiered Subscription Model: participants can select from multiple options, ensuring accessibility and relevance to their current practice.

  • Session Flexibility: Participants may choose focused, one-time refreshers or comprehensive bundles for more in-depth engagement.

Eligibility Requirements

CALT LEVEL (Take Flight and Jet Subscriptions)/ or CALP Level trained in Jet

To ensure the highest quality and relevance of training, access to Take Flight and Jet tiers is limited to active professionals in the field.

  • All subscribers must provide proof of current CALT membership, confirming active professional status.

  • Participants are required to hold a valid Take Flight 2-year Training Completion Certificate, or a 5-day Retraining Certificate, from an IMSLEC and/or ALTA accredited training center, demonstrating completion in the Take Flight, or Jet curriculums.

  • CALP level participants who obtained their credentials using Jet may subscribe to only Jet Training, and must provide valid certifying credentials and certificate in Jet program.

Dyslexia Specialists/Reading Specialist Level trained in Build, Rite Flight, Turbo Start

Access to this level is designed for those who work with students with specific learning disabilities, both in public and private settings, who have been trained in the Build, Turbo Start, and/or Rite Flight curriculum.

  • Participants must show a certificate of attendance from the one-day seminar in the appropriate curriculum.

  • A picture of the front cover of the Teacher Edition Books is required also.

Program Benefits

  • Targeted Professional Growth: Participants receive hands-on demonstrations and expert guidance in specific lessons.

  • Flexible Scheduling: Session structures accommodate the demanding schedules of practicing CALTs, making professional development accessible and convenient. Participants may sign up for lesson demonstrations of their choice. Each demonstration will be 15 minutes with a follow-up Q&A. Participants can choose to attend the face-to-face demonstration via Zoom, or watch the lesson on-demand.

  • Interactive Learning: Q&A opportunities ensure individualized support and practical troubleshooting for common challenges in the field. Once a month DTEC Waco will host a 15 minute Q&A event. This is an opportunity for participants to ask questions about any part of the curriculum not covered by the lesson demonstrations.

  • Recognition of Commitment: Upon completion of a session, participants will receive a certificate of attendance to show proof of professional development. Some Expert Lecture Series evens may be approved by the Academic Language Therapy Association (ALTA).

Why Should You Sign Up?

The Refresh Training Program's tiered structure is intentionally designed to empower dyslexia professionals with the tools and insights they need for academic excellence and to further secure their knowledge and expertise in Scottish Rite curriculum and in various topics facing professionals in the dyslexia community. By meeting eligibility criteria and engaging in focused, interactive sessions, participants can confidently deliver best-in-class interventions and remain at the forefront of their profession.
