Write Idea: A Dysgraphia and Written Expression Intervention (Write Idea) is a curriculum written by the staff of the Luke Waites Center for Dyslexia and Learning Disorders at Scottish Rite for Children (SRC) hospital in Dallas, Texas. Write Idea builds on the success of our previous dyslexia interventions, Take Flight: A Comprehensive Intervention for Students with Dyslexia (Take Flight) and Bridges: A Dyslexia Intervention Connecting Teacher, Avatar and Student (Bridges). However, Write Idea is unique among SRC programs because its purpose is to support students with dysgraphia.

Dysgraphia is a condition characterized by persistent struggles producing written work accurately, fluently, and legibly, even after receiving conventional handwriting instruction. It commonly co-occurs with dyslexia, possibly more than 50% of the time. While multi-modal dyslexia interventions include handwriting instruction, the focus of these programs is not on developing written expression skills in struggling writers. The persistent challenges of dysgraphia require more intentional instruction and practice in accurate handwriting and generating good written expression. Furthermore, dysgraphia can also occur in good readers without dyslexia. Therefore, SRC staff developed the Write Idea program to provide students with dysgraphia the extra support needed to become proficient in written language.
